Episode 9: Fostering belonging: Cris and Capri on Hanlan’s Point and queer spaces

In the latest episode of Getting Reflective, I had the privilege of sitting down with two inspiring community organizers, Cris Nippard and Capri Contreras De-Blasis. Both Cris and Capri identify as queer and non-binary, using they/them pronouns, and are deeply committed to fostering inclusive spaces within Toronto's diverse community.

Cris, a 19-year-old Black, queer, non-binary radical and activist, has been passionate about social justice, community work, and the arts since the age of 14. Born and based in Toronto, they bring a youthful yet profound perspective to the ongoing struggles and triumphs within marginalized communities. Capri, 24, identifies as a white Latino with Chilean and Argentinian heritage. Born in Canada, they are dedicated to community gathering and creating a sense of belonging for all.

Our conversation centered around their recent event at Hanlan’s Point Beach on Toronto Island. Historically a queer space, Hanlan’s Point has been a symbol of freedom and acceptance, but not without its challenges. Cris and Capri shared insights into the significance of reclaiming and maintaining such spaces, emphasizing the importance of safe environments where individuals can express themselves authentically.

We delved into topics of identity and intersectionality, discussing how their diverse backgrounds influence their activism and community work. Cris spoke about the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality, and how these facets shape their experiences in the activist sphere. Capri highlighted the nuances of privilege and the responsibilities that come with it, particularly in the context of community organizing.

One of the most compelling parts of our discussion was exploring what both Cris and Capri are currently unlearning. They shared personal reflections on dismantling internalized limitations and the continuous journey towards self-awareness and growth. This honest exchange underscored the importance of self-reflection in effective activism and community engagement.

Their passion for fostering connection and belonging was evident throughout our conversation. By organizing events (like the recent one on Hanlan’s Point Beach), they are not only creating joyful gatherings but also reinforcing the legacy of queer spaces in Toronto.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in social justice, community building, and the power of intersectional activism. Tune in to gain valuable insights and be inspired by Cris and Capri's dedication to making a difference.
